Day One

Morning: Fuel Up For Adventure

Small-town western charm meets gorgeous natural scenery along the whole Weiser River. Kick off your adventure in Midvale at the Country Coffee Cabin, a community hub where locals gather. You’ll find hearty, home-cooked meals at this local gem, so come hungry.

Head north on US 95 to Cambridge, then turn onto ID 71. This marks the beginning of your descent into the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon, where the scenery gets more dramatic with every mile.

Afternoon: Conquer the Canyon

Drive to the end of the road and arrive at the Hells Canyon Creek Visitor Center, where knowledgeable rangers can walk you through the interpretive exhibits and share the area’s secrets (like where wildlife has been most recently sighted!). Take in the aerial view of the river before walking down to the boat ramp to meet the friendly folks from Hells Canyon Adventures.

Brace yourself for an adrenaline-fueled half-day jet boat tour through the deepest, wildest, and most scenic section of Hells Canyon. Sheer rock walls tower above you as you navigate heart-pounding whitewater through a truly untamed wilderness. Keep an eye out for bald eagles soaring overhead, bighorn sheep picking their way down cliffsides, and bears foraging in the brush. Your guide will share stories of native people and early settlers who called this rugged and remote landscape home.

Evening: Wind Down in Cambridge

After your thrilling afternoon, retrace your drive back to Cambridge. By the time you arrive, you’ll be ready to refuel at Gateway Pizza before checking in to the family-owned and operated Frontier Motel. Relax by the pool or stretch your legs on a nearby section of the Weiser River Trail, an 84-mile rails-to-trails project. The trail runs the length of the entire corridor and through each major town along the way. The staff at Frontier are very knowledgeable about adventures and trails in the area, so take advantage of a local’s perspective and let them show you the way.

Local’s Tip: Ask a local! Idahoans are always happy to help a traveler in need of advice.

Day Two

Morning: Sweet Treats and Soothing Soaks

Start at Oh Honey Bee-stro, owned and operated by two local beekeepers. Come for a creative coffee drink, stay for the legendary biscuits and gravy, and leave with a jar of whipped honey (and zero regrets).

Next up: bliss at Mundo Hot Springs. Geothermal water flows constantly through the pool, keeping the mineral-rich water fresh and sparkling! With valley views and wide open skies, a soak in the Mundo pools will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Grab lunch in their bistro before you head out. Homemade soups, salads, and sandwiches will get you to your next stop!

Afternoon: History at the Museum

Dive into Adams County history at the Council Valley Museum. Interactive tours reveal fascinating stories of native people and early settlers who shaped the river valley. Marvel at preserved clothing, hats, and even a quilt that made the trek to Idaho on the Oregon Trail in the 1870s.

Work off lunch with another walk on the Weiser River Trail, if the time allows. The trail leaves town in both directions for a long or short walk on the easy railroad grade. Keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers.

Evening: Authentic Western Night

Dinner at the Ace Saloon is non-negotiable. This old-timey saloon buzzes with local energy and is full of character. You’ll find good food, live music, an outdoor beer garden, karaoke nights, a dance floor, and a pool table. There’s something for every mood!

Then check into the Elkhorn Bed and Breakfast for an authentic ranch stay with homey comforts. There’s little to no light pollution out here, so the stargazing is really something to behold.

Day Three

Lost Creek Picnic

After a hearty breakfast with the friendly B&B host, Debra, you’ll head to Lost Creek Falls. Spring delivers perfect conditions for this 2.5 mile out-and-back trail. Recent spring snowmelt means this waterfall is at its most dramatic and heart-thumping this time of year. The trail is painted with spring wildflowers and brilliant new growth. Pack a picnic lunch if you want to linger and soak up more of Southwest Idaho’s serenity before heading home.
